Chapter One
A young girl, possible five or six years of age, skipped down the quite halls of a German hospital behind her chaparone. Her brown curls bounce around her shoulders. She could care less about what went on around her. All she wanted to do was to visit her grandfather after his hip surgery. That is, until she passed the nurses' station.
"A social worker will be here to meet with them today," a blond nurse with shimering blond hair, pulled into a tight bun, whispered to another.
"It's a shame about their mother," she whispered back. "She was all they had."
The small girl stopped, now insanely curious. What was a social worker? And who was this worker going to see? She wandered down a random corridoor, not even thinking about the fact that she had no idea where she was going.
All the doors on the hall were closed, except for one. This door was cracked slightly. The girl stopped and peeked inside. She saw a boy, a few years older than her, propped up on a bunch of pillows in a bed. His dark blond or possibly light brown hair looked like ropes to the girl. They were spead over his pillows like snakes. He was starring at the tv absentmindedly, not even really watching it. He had a great sadness about him.
The girl pushed the door open a bit more. In her wider range of view, she saw another bed, with another boy. His short black hair was an absolute mess. He was curled in a ball with he covers pulled up to his chin, yet he was shaking. He appeared to be sleeping, but big fat tears squeezed out from beneath his closed eyelids. The girl jumped when he let out a sob.
The other boy snapped out of his trance. He pushed his blankets to the end of the bed and put his bare feet on the cold floor. He had bandages of several different kinds on his arms and legs. He crossed the room to the other bed and sat on it. The boy that was crying sat up as soon as he felt weight on the bed and wrapped his arms around the other boy, buring his face in his chest.
"Excuse me."
The girl jumped again. She turned and looked up. The was a very professionaly looking woman standing behind her.
"Hello there," she said kindly to the girl. "What are you doing here?"
The girls face lit up. "Are you a social worker!?"
The woman chuckled. "Why, yes I am."
"What do you do?"
"I do many things. One thing is that I help children who have no parents find homes."
"Is that why you are here to see these boys?"
The woman was entertained by the girl's curiousety. "unforutunatly, yes."
A smile spread across the girl's face. "They can live with us!! My gamma and and gampa took me to live with them when my mommy and daddy died!"
"Linnaea!!!" And elderly woman with panic written all over her face dashed down the hall.
"Linnaea! Don't scare me like that!"
"Gamma! Gamma!! Can those boys in there live with us!!?"
"What?"
The social worker chuckled again.
The old woman looked at the youunger woman. "I'm so sorry. She just gets so excited about things."
"That's quite alright."
The older woman knelt next to her granddaughter. "Lenn, sweety, you cna't just take people who aren't part of your family in."
"But-"
"Lenn, I'm sorry. You know your grandfather and I would if we could. I'm sure they are very nice boys."
"Um, maam?" The social worker said.
"Yes?"
"Could I speak with you a moment?"
"Certainly."
